Terry Gilliam, now 84, had hoped to make one final film to crown his illustrious career — a project titled “Carnival at the End of Days,” featuring an impressive cast.

Back in August, I reported A24 was so confident in Josh Safdie’s “Marty Supreme” that they might give it an early splash at NYFF as a “surprise screening.” It now looks like it’s happening.

Suffice it to say, things aren’t looking great for Dwayne Johnson’s film at the moment. It only made $1.9M on Friday, not counting Thursday previews.

There’s no script. No release date. No cast. And Universal isn’t even certain it wants another one—at least not unless they can slash about $150M from the budget.

The film was shot on 35mm VistaVision by three-time Oscar winner Emmanuel Lubezki and, according to Iñárritu, will be released “sometime next fall.”

It’s a position Allen has repeated many times: he’ll make films as long as someone is willing to bankroll them, but he won’t compromise. That support is unlikely to come from Hollywood.

What’s truly perplexing is how a rising talent like Powell, whose star has been steadily ascending thanks to smart film choices, would attach himself to a series this braindead.

Here’s a strange one: a production grid is listing Ti West as shooting a project titled “Scrooge” in Ireland and England. No official word yet on whether it’s an actual Ebenezer Scrooge movie.

This year’s Best Actor race is in need of contenders, with only Leonardo DiCaprio, Jeremy Allen White, and yes, Dwayne Johnson having generated any legitimate Oscar buzz.
