Back in May, I reported that Jordan Peele fans hoping for a quick turnaround on his next film might want to lower their expectations. The director went back to square one creatively, and now things appear even murkier.
Universal had originally staked out October 23, 2026 for Peele’s fourth feature, but that date is now gone. The film has officially been pulled from the release calendar and sits undated.
This isn’t the first time Peele’s plans have shifted. He was once targeting December 25, 2024, before scrapping that project in favor of something new. Now, word is that even this second idea might have been tossed aside, with the filmmaker reportedly brainstorming yet another direction as recently as this summer.
Sources close to the situation stress that this creative reset has nothing to do with the layoffs at Monkeypaw in April 2025, when several staffers, including senior development execs, were let go. That was more about industry-wide belt-tightening and adjustments in Peele’s overall deal with Universal.
It’s been an unusual path since Peele’s last feature, 2022’s “Nope.” That film sharply divided audiences, but cemented him as a unique voice in genre filmmaking. Whatever Peele had in development post-“Nope” now seems to have evaporated, fueling speculation that he’s feeling the weight of following up three ambitious, original projects.
One insider suggested Peele himself doesn’t yet know what this next movie will be. Not entirely uncommon for a filmmaker of his stature, but it does cast doubt on whether 2026 was ever realistic.
So far, Peele has delivered three films over the past eight years. All were well-received, but none have managed to recapture the cultural zeitgeist, or impact, of his debut, “Get Out.”
