Jordan Peele Back to the Drawing Board? 2026 Release in Doubt — Struggling to Follow Up ‘Nope’

May 16, 2025 Jordan Ruimy

Jordan Peele fans hoping for a swift return to the director’s chair may need to temper expectations.

Universal has penciled in an October 23, 2026 release date for Peele’s next film, but don’t hold your breath—this date is more of a placeholder than a promise. It doesn’t help that Warner Bros. recently dated M. Night Shyamalan’s next film (“Remain”) on that same October date next year.

Originally, Peele had something slated for December 25, 2024, but he scrapped that version and pivoted to something new. Now, even that second script might have been tossed aside, as whispers suggest the filmmaker is back at square one, cooking up yet another idea.

One source tells me this sudden change in direction has nothing to do with the April 2025 layoffs at Peele’s Monkeypaw, which saw several staff, including top development executives, being let go of their duties, likely due to industry-wide cutbacks and shifts in his deal with Universal.

It’s been a curious road since Peele’s last outing, 2022’s “Nope,” which divided audiences (I liked it) but nonetheless reinforced his reputation as a distinctive voice in genre filmmaking. Whatever he was working on post-“Nope” has seemingly vanished into the ether, further fueling speculation that Peele may be grappling with the pressures of following up a trilogy of ambitious original films.

There’s also the broader question of whether he’s aiming for something more grounded this time, or doubling down on the high-concept territory that’s become his trademark. Sources close to the situation suggest that even Peele himself might not yet know exactly what this next project will be.

That level of creative ambiguity isn’t unusual for a filmmaker of his stature, but it does raise concerns about whether the 2026 date will hold. One thing’s for sure: whatever Peele eventually delivers, moviegoers will be watching closely— not just to see what kind of story he wants to tell next, but whether he can continue redefining modern horror, or if the long wait will raise expectations too high to meet.
