In case you’re unaware, Bong Joon Ho, coming off “Mickey 17,” has decided to make a family-friendly animated film called “Ally,” and NEON recently acquired it, which means it could potentially screen at Cannes 2027.
Furthermore, we now have a voice cast, and it seems plenty of stars want to take part in Bong’s next adventure. Those names include Ayo Edebiri, Bradley Cooper, Dave Bautista, and Finn Wolfhard (via Variety).
In the animated film, we follow Ally — a curious, endearing piglet squid living deep in the uncharted waters of the South Pacific. She dreams of one day reaching the surface and starring in a wildlife documentary. But when a mysterious aircraft crashes into the ocean, her quiet world is abruptly disrupted. Joined by a small band of unlikely but loyal companions, Ally is pulled into an extraordinary journey that carries her all the way to the surface.
It sounds heartwarming and family-friendly, which is a major departure for Bong. The film is reportedly the most expensive production in Korean film history, with costs—translated into USD—estimated at around $60 million.
“Ally” was co-written by Bong and Jason Yu. Bong has reportedly been working on the screenplay for over eight years. The score will be composed by Marco Beltrami (“Logan”), and he is also expected to reunite with “Snowpiercer” and “Parasite” cinematographer Hong Kyung-pyo (“Hope”) for the film.
Bong’s most notable credits include “Parasite,” “The Host,” “Memories of a Murder,” “Mother,” and “Snowpiercer.”
