Colman Domingo’s directorial debut was supposed to be “Scandalous,” starring Sydney Sweeney as Kim Novak and David Jonsson as Sammy Davis Jr. — it was supposed to shoot early this year but has now been postponed, with Domingo prioritizing another project.
He will actually make his debut behind the camera on “Unforgettable,” a musical biopic of legendary singer Nat King Cole. Domingo will play Cole, and he has also co-written the script and will produce.
The movie will chart his journey as musician and quiet revolutionary, navigating racial injustice, Hollywood sabotage and self doubt to ensure his legacy and help pave the way for future generations of artists and Black men and women.
We also have Deadline reporting that the film, which is being shopped around at the EFM Berlin film market, is being pitched in as PG-13 for “broad appeal.”
Cole, a celebrated singer and jazz pianist, rose to prominence with songs such as Unforgettable and his 1960 album The Magic of Christmas, which became the decade’s top-selling holiday record. Confronted with racial prejudice—including a violent incident on stage in Alabama—he refused to perform at segregated venues, became an active NAACP member, and took part in the March on Washington.
“Unforgettable” is slated to begin production later this year and will likely follow after Domingo completes his promotional commitments and numerous upcoming acting projects.
In April, he has both “Michael” and “Euphoria” set to debut, and in June, Steven Spielberg’s “Disclosure Day” will be released, in which he co-stars alongside Emily Blunt and Josh O’Connor. A busy 2026 lies ahead for Domingo.
