UPDATE: Some more intel, this time from TheInSneider, who is told that Fincher “isn’t especially happy with how the film turned out” and pushed for significant reshoots that would have come at “significant expense.” Netflix refused those demands but has ultimately agreed to a few days of additional photography this month.
Fincher has had a really hard time finishing this film, and it could slip to next year if key deadlines aren't met. It's not just the reshoots. Remember, Fincher also had to put editing on 'Cliff Booth' on hold earlier this summer due to personal issues. At this point, a delay to 2027 wouldn't be the least bit surprising.
EARLIER: A major update regarding David Fincher and his various projects, via The Playlist, who, if you remember, were the first to report on ‘Cliff Booth.’ I’ll have more on this report, but for now let’s concentrate on the Tarantino-penned spinoff.
Turns out, ‘Cliff Booth’ will need “a few days” of reshoots with Brad Pitt, set to take place this month. The additional shooting—including the rebuilding of some large sets—is why ‘Cliff Booth’ has been absent from the fall festivals: the film simply isn’t ready.
Of additional interest, cinematographer Erik Messerschmidt is not part of the reshoots. He’s busy with Matt Reeves’ “The Batman Part II,” so Fincher has decided to go old school, with his longtime collaborating DP Jeff Cronenweth serving as cinematographer on the ‘Cliff Booth’ reshoots. Cronenweth and Fincher formed an iconic partnership on “Fight Club,” “The Social Network,” “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,” and “Gone Girl.” They haven’t worked together in twelve years.
If you remember, Venice Film Festival boss, Alberto Barbera, recently mentioned that the original plan was for ‘Cliff Booth’ to have its world premiere on the Lido, but the film was simply “not ready” to be included in the lineup. Now we know that the culprit seems to be these reshoots.
The film had actually wrapped its six-month production in January 2026, and it’s been in post for the last eight months. Fincher is well known for taking his time in the editing room, but the clock is now ticking, with less than four months left before its release and additional photography still set to take place.
No plot details have leaked about the $200M+ ‘Cliff Booth’ except that it’s set to take place a few years after Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon A Time in Hollywood.” In addition to Pitt, the cast also includes Timothy Olyphant, Elizabeth Debicki, Scott Caan, Carla Gugino, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Peter Weller, and Holt McCallany.
The film will debut in an exclusive two-week IMAX theatrical run on November 25, 2026, and is only set to hit Netflix streaming around a month later, on December 23, 2026.
Eisenberg has made a surreal nightmare of a comedy, one that's a step up in polish. It helps that Moore is wildly unhinged here — this performance is something to see, and some of her strongest work in years.
