Josh Brolin Says Possibility of ‘Sicario 3’ Happening is “Very Very Real”

August 7, 2025 Jordan Ruimy

Apparently, this sequel is still happening.

Back in October 2023, I had reported that the original cast of 2015’s “Sicario” — Benicio del Toro, Emily Blunt and Josh Brolin — would all be coming back for the third film. This would be an upgrade compared to the underwhelming “Sicario 2: Day of the Soldado,” which Blunt wasn’t a part of.

Since then, not much of an update, but Brolin is yet again stirring the pot when it comes to this project, telling the Happy Sad Confused’s Joah Horowitz that the possibility of a third film is “very very real.”

The third instalment, often referred to as “Sicario: Capos,” has been in the works since around 2018. Two years ago, Producers Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee confirmed that a script was partially written before being paused due to the WGA strike, and the idea was “awesome.”

At some point, Christopher McQuarrie was involved before he finally exited the project, no doubt to help out BFF Tom Cruise with whatever projects he had in the works. Also, Denis Villeneuve, who directed the first film, has indicated he would not be involved with the third one.

I’m guessing ‘Sicario 2’ director Stefano Sollima will not be back as well since he hasn’t been mentioned at all by Brolin or the producers, and it’s all for the better since his sequel was rather disappointing and a shell compared to Villeneuve’s visceral 2015 original.

Quite honestly, what’s the point of making another ‘Sicario’ without Villeneuve? He elevated the original with his direction, and Roger Deakins’ stunning cinematography. That atmosphere cannot be replicated without them. Time to lay this entire project to rest.
