Alden Ehrenreich, who won a Tony in June, has joined Joseph Kosinski’s “Miami Vice ’85,” which stars Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler.
Eight years ago, Ehrenreich, who was seen by many as a rising star, was blamed in some circles for “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” which led to a five-year break from acting. He is now back, and with a vengeance, having nabbed supporting roles in “Oppenheimer” and “Weapons,” and, this year, winning a Tony for “Becky Shaw,” which came with a ton of critical acclaim.
Deadline says Ehrenreich had “upwards of eight offers on the table,” but ultimately couldn’t resist the opportunity to star opposite Jordan and Butler in Kosinski’s anticipated blockbuster. No details about the role Ehrenreich has been tapped to play have been revealed.
Who is the villain? There had been rumors that Tom Cruise might sign on as the antagonist. His summer schedule is reportedly open, and he’s also very familiar with Kosinski, who previously directed him in “Oblivion” and “Top Gun: Maverick.” That said, I don’t buy that he’s involved here at all.
“Miami Vice ’85” recently had its release delayed by a year, to May 19, 2028. The film, a stylized reboot set in the 1980s, is set to enter production in October. More casting is expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
Claudio Miranda, the Oscar-winning cinematographer of “Life of Pi,” who previously worked on “F1” and “Top Gun: Maverick,” has signed on as director of photography. Dan Gilroy (“Nightcrawler”) wrote the script.
Michael Mann attempted a cinematic interpretation of “Miami Vice” in 2006, starring Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell. The film grossed $165 million worldwide against a $135 million budget. The film was seen as a flop at the time before being reappraised, in some circles, as a strong film.
Kosinski is coming off the $600M+ success of “F1,” starring Brad Pitt. He also has an untitled UFO whistleblower thriller in the works at Apple. His other notable credits include “Top Gun: Maverick,” “Oblivion,” “Tron: Legacy,” and “Only the Brave.”
