‘One Battle After Another’ Leads Gotham Awards With Six Nominations

October 28, 2025 Jordan Ruimy

Even though honestly, nobody really gives a damn about the Gothams, I’m still reporting this because… well, why not? And I have to admit, anytime “If I Had Legs I’d Kick You” gets some love, then I’m all onboard.

Yes, the first wave of nominations for the 2025–2026 awards season is officially out. The Gotham Film & Media Institute revealed the 2025 Gotham Awards nominees this morning, and as expected, “One Battle After Another” dominated with a record six nods. It’s up for Best Feature, Best Director (Paul Thomas Anderson), Best Adapted Screenplay (Anderson), Best Supporting Performance (Benecio Del Toro, Teyana Taylor), and Breakthrough Performer (Chase Infiniti).

Interestingly, despite a reported $140–170M budget, last year the Gothams lifted their usual budget restrictions, making the field more competitive. previous years, to be eligible for the Gothams, a film’s budget couldn’t exceed $35M. Fair? Well, it was a clear move to get bigger names and studios involved, but at the cost of omitting much-needed attention to other indies.

Meanwhile, Jafar Panahi’s “It Was An Accident” and Mary Bronstein’s “If I Had Legs I’d Kick You” each earned three nominations, including Best Feature. Other Best Feature contenders include Chloe Zhao’s “Hamnet” and a couple of other heavy hitters. Worth noting: Josh Safdie’s “Marty Supreme” and Bradley Cooper’s “Is This Thing On?” didn’t make it in due to early screening deadlines.

This year’s voting committee for Best Feature is composed of five film critics: Variety’s Peter Debruge, The New Yorker’s Justin Chang, IndieWire’s Kate Erbland, Rolling Stone’s David Fear and freelancer Tomris Laffly.

The 2025 Gotham Awards ceremony takes place Monday, December 1, at Cipriani Wall Street.
