Luca Guadagnino’s ‘American Psycho’ NOT Being Gender-Swapped

October 28, 2025 Jordan Ruimy

That story (via The Sun) about Luca Guadagnino’s “American Psycho” reboot being gender-swapped, with Margot Robbie allegedly eyeing the Patrick Bateman role? Yeah, not true.

Sources close to the production are putting the fantasy to bed. The infamous Wall Street psycho won’t be getting a femme fatale makeover. Thank the heavens for that. If Guadagnino does it right then it’ll keep the spirit of the source material, which very much needs a male lead.

The hype around Guadagnino and Lionsgate’s reimagining has been growing ever since the project was first revealed a year ago. Social media sleuths have thrown around every name to play Bateman, including Austin Butler, and Jacob Elordi, but as of now, casting remains very much in flux.

Can anyone actually replicate the astonishing work Bale gave us in that film? I have my doubts. It was a role he was born to play.

Scott Z. Burns is adapting Bret Easton Ellis’ controversial 1991 novel, which shocked readers with its graphic depictions of Manhattan psychopath. Lionsgate is producing. The story itself remains: Bateman, New York investment banker by day, remorseless killer by night, juggling a meticulously curated life while indulging in violent fantasies at night.

For the time being, we can just rewatch Mary Harron’s excellent adaptation, starring Christian Bale, which was released in 2000. Why make another one when it was perfected this well? Guadagnino previously revealed he had never seen the original until very recently.

Guadagnino is tied up with other projects, including “Artificial,” a feature tackling Sam Altman and OpenAI for Amazon, which is set to release next year. “American Psycho” could very well be next, but nothing’s been confirmed yet.
