There’s lots of movement when it comes to Bradley Cooper’s “Ocean’s Eleven” prequel, which already stars Cooper, Margot Robbie, Wagner Moura, and Monica Barbaro.
Josh Gad has joined the cast in an undisclosed role, but I’m hearing it’s a substantial one. It could be Reuben, originally played by Elliott Gould in the first three films. Seth Rogen was previously offered the part, and there were reports earlier this week that he had been cast before his representatives shut down the rumor.
Furthermore, Linus Sandgren (“La La Land”) has dropped out as cinematographer and has been replaced by Ben Davis, who shot Martin McDonagh’s last four films, including his impressive work on “The Banshees of Inisherin” and the upcoming “Wild Horse Nine.”
I’m told much more casting is still to come on “Oceans,” which is very much an ensemble in the same vein as the Soderbergh-directed films. Production is expected to begin this month in Europe.
Cooper completely rewrote Carrie Solomon’s original screenplay alongside newcomer Charles Randolo. The story has Cooper and Robbie playing the parents of Danny Ocean, the character portrayed by George Clooney in Steven Soderbergh’s “Ocean’s Eleven.” Moura plays the film’s villain.
I previously wrote: “In this prequel, the Oceans teach their children—young Danny and Debbie (the latter originally portrayed by Sandra Bullock)—the art of stealing from the rich. Set against the backdrop of the 1962 Monaco Grand Prix, the film is described as a stylish, old-school caper inspired by Hitchcock’s “To Catch a Thief.”
“Oceans” is currently undated. There’s talk that it’s eyeing a summer 2027 release through Warner Bros. Pictures. More to come…
This project is the total opposite of Snyder’s usual maximalist brand of filmmaking. Hell, there’s not even a distributor attached to it yet.
