Just a quick word on “Minions and Monsters,” which is actually the best-reviewed of the “Minions” movies, with a 67 on Metacritic and an 88% on Rotten Tomatoes. It hit theaters yesterday and is expected to do good business at the box office.
“Minions and Monsters” had a $14M+ Wednesday, with positive audience exits, an “A-” CinemaScore, and PostTrak scores in the 80s, all of which should carry this one forward. We’re looking at a $75M 5-day opening for the animated film, continuing this incredible summer at the box office. This month will also see the release of “Moana,” “The Odyssey,” and “Spider-Man: Brand New Day.”
Still, that $75M+ opening for “Minions & Monsters” is a steep drop compared to the previous two instalments. “Minions” (2015) had a 3-day total of $115M, while “Minions: The Rise of Gru” (2022) made $107M, also over three days. Market saturation and franchise fatigue might finally be setting in when it comes to these yellow oddballs.
