Yet another update on Dario Argento’s next film, which stars Isabelle Huppert and was supposed to shoot in 2022, then 2023, and then 2024 — it might finally be happening, but a grain of salt is still warranted.
In a recent interview with an Italian outlet, Argento confirmed that the film will be shot in French, in Paris, this coming September, and will be produced by Les Films du Camélia. Huppert is still attached to star. In another, more recent interview, Argento called the upcoming film the “bloodiest” of his career.
One of the reasons for the delays was Argento fracturing his femur (ouch) during a fall in 2023. No plot details have been revealed, but the film is said to be a loose remake of a classic 1940s Mexican movie. We’re not exactly sure which one, but I assume we’ll be getting more details as pre-production starts to ramp up.
Here’s Huppert in her own words:
Dario is a major filmmaker […] I am happy to finally be making this film with him. He’s such a strange and original artist, but I cannot say too much about this project.
Argento is, of course, legendary for his giallo style of filmmaking, having directed classics such as “Suspiria” and “Deep Red” in the '70s. Luca Guadagnino remade the former in 2018. Argento, who was credited as a producer, admitted the remake failed to “excite” him, adding that it felt more like a "betrayal."
Meanwhile, Argento’s last film, “Dark Glasses,” released in 2022, did not garner the kindest of reviews. The Italian master hasn’t really made a good film since 1990’s “Opera,” or a great one since 1982’s “Tenebrae,” but a comeback is always welcome—especially when you cast one of the world’s greatest living actresses and describe the project as the “bloodiest” of your career.
