Joseph Kosinski’s “Miami Vice ‘85” is filling out its cast, with sources telling Deadline that Whitney Peak has joined as the film’s female lead.
Peak joins Alden Ehrenreich, who was recently cast in the film, alongside leads Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler. Kosinski is directing from a script by Dan Gilroy, based on an earlier draft by Eric Warren Singer, with production set to begin in October and an IMAX release scheduled for May 19, 2028.
The film will explore “the glamour and corruption of mid-’80s Miami,” drawing inspiration from the pilot episode of the TV series. The new version is apparently “preserving the characters and aesthetic that made “Miami Vice” such a cultural touchstone.”
Peak reportedly beat out several actresses for the female lead after a series of auditions and final chemistry tests with Michael B. Jordan last month. While her character has not been officially confirmed, sources say she will play Jordan’s love interest.
This is a big deal for Peak, one of the stars of the “Gossip Girl” reboot, who will next appear in “The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping,” and Amazon/MGM’s “4 Kids Walk Into a Bank.” She most recently starred alongside Phoebe Dynevor in Netflix’s shark thriller “Thrasher.”
While we’re at it, there’s still no word on who will play the villain. Could it be Ehrenreich? I’ve heard Kosinski offered Miles Teller an unspecified role, but the actor turned it down due to a scheduling conflict. Makes sense. Teller has worked with Kosinski on three movies.
Should we even be calling these “Evil Dead” movies anymore? Beyond the Necronomicon and Deadites, little connects them to the anarchic spirit of Sam Raimi’s original trilogy.
