Hayden Panettiere has died at 36. The cause of death has not been publicly established.
Police reportedly responded to an incident involving Panettiere, and an investigation is underway. She had also reportedly complained of health problems in the months before her death. Given her well-documented history with alcohol and substance abuse, it is impossible not to wonder whether those struggles played some role.
The news is almost impossible to process because Panettiere had been famous for practically her entire life. She was the little girl in “Remember the Titans,” the voice of Dot in “A Bug’s Life,” Britney Allen in “Bring It On: All or Nothing,” Kirby Reed in “Scream 4” and “Scream VI,” Juliette Barnes in “Nashville” and Claire Bennet in “Heroes.”
Panetierre never really got the luxury of growing up outside the public eye. She became a recognizable face before she was old enough to understand what that recognition might cost her.
She spoke publicly about alcoholism, addiction, postpartum depression, losing custody of her daughter, abusive relationships, being mistreated as a young actress, an alleged attempt to sexually exploit her when she was still a teenager, and the death of her younger brother Jansen in 2023. Earlier this year, she was promoting her memoir and spoke with a striking frankness about her life.
The psychological burden of child stardom. It’s taken so many from us. There’s something deeply unsettling about it, particularly in Hollywood, where kids are often expected to carry the same pressures as adults without having the emotional maturity, or protection, to understand what they’re being exposed to.
I won’t claim to have ever been wowed by Panettiere‘s work, but it felt like we watched her grow up right in front of our eyes. There’s something especially painful about her passing because, in recent years, she seemed to be trying to reclaim a life and career that had been derailed by so much trauma. That she is now gone, at just 36, is profoundly sad.
