A recent casting grid circulating online has sparked discussion about Michael Mann’s “Heat 2,” and the roles being assigned to the actors involved. Here’s the lowdown.
Leonardo DiCaprio is reportedly in talks to portray Chris Shiherlis, a role originally played by Val Kilmer. The grid also suggests that Christian Bale is being considered for Vincent Hanna, the obsessive LAPD detective originally portrayed by Al Pacino.
This would mean that DiCaprio and Bale would barely have any scenes together in “Heat 2,” since Chris and Vincent exist in separate timelines. It would be very similar to De Niro and Pacino in the original, who only really shared that one iconic face-to-face sitdown.
Stephen Graham is listed as a potential Neil McCauley, the disciplined and emotionally restrained thief originally played by Robert De Niro.
Finally, Adam Driver is said to be interested in the central villain role, the very violent Otis Lloyd Wardell, a psychopathic criminal operating primarily in Chicago. His presence ties together the prequel and sequel halves of the book’s structure, which spans decades and multiple locations.
Jason Clarke is also part of the cast, but the grid does not mention who he would play. If I had to guess, it’s probably Nate (originally played by Jon Voight) who helps Shiherlis after the events of the 1995 film, making him essential to the story. He wouldn't have as much screentime as the other four mentioned, but would still be a key component on “Heat 2.”
A September 2026 to March 2027 shooting schedule is currently being discussed for “Heat 2.” Michael Mann has spent the last few years carefully laying the groundwork for this dual prequel-sequel hybrid based on his 2022 novel co-written with Meg Gardiner. The book explores the early lives and later trajectories of McCauley and Hanna.
Last year, Amazon/MGM reportedly picked up the project after it moved on from Warner Bros., which stepped away following extended negotiations over the budget. Mann had reportedly been seeking more than $200M to bring the film to fruition. No release date announced just yet for “Heat 2.”
