We now live in a world where Uwe Boll is being described as a “bold” and “fearless” filmmaker online for making a film that nobody in their right mind would dare make in Hollywood.
We also live in a world where Boll has a massive hit on his hands—perhaps the most talked-about movie at the moment—to the point where it has entered the political discourse and sparked controversy, conversation, and debate, much of it hostile and almost all of it lacking nuance. It’s the Wild West out there when it comes to this film, and Boll — the agent of chaos — must be loving every second of it.
Yes, “Citizen Vigilante,” a film about violent Muslim migrants in Europe—some who commit gang rapes, others who stab people in the throat—has become a major digital hit. That’s after it was made available to watch for free for 48 hours by Elon Musk on X.
The charts don’t lie. It’s currently the #2 movie on Apple TV’s Top Movies list and #1 on Amazon’s rental charts. That’s quite the feat for a film helmed by a man once known as “the worst director of all time,” with a reported $4M budget, currently outpacing blockbuster titles—some with budgets 40 times larger—such as “Michael” and “Project Hail Mary.”
It’s gotten to the point where Boll is now all but confirming a “Citizen Vigilante” sequel, this time set in the United States. He has posted two teaser posters on his X feed, including one bearing the title “Citizen Vigilante 2: The End of Somali Scams.”
“Citizen Vigilante,” in its own ham-fisted way—a Boll specialty—doesn’t hide its flaws. You get Boll’s usual unnecessary sex scene, thinly developed characters, abrupt shifts in tone, and rapid editing. Hammer remains stone-faced throughout. Yet, the suave businessman that he is, Boll has managed to tap into the zeitgeist with this one by taking advantage of our current political polarization.
Of course, this is a right-versus-left issue—that’s a major reason the film has received so much attention. The culture wars haven’t gone anywhere; they’re still very much alive in 2026. To its supporters, the quality of ‘Citizen Vigilante’ doesn’t matter; it’s the messaging that matters most.
“A History of Violence” writer Josh Olson went viral on X after criticizing Elon Musk’s involvement, writing, “The richest man in the world is actively pushing a movie that openly promotes the graphic, brutal and wholesale slaughter of Muslim immigrants. This isn’t some plausibly deniable hand gesture. This is explicit.”
Plenty of X users pushed back against Olson, calling him a “cuck,” “woke,” “libtard,” “communist,” and “low-estrogen pussy.”
Whether this marks the beginning of an alternative Hollywood remains to be seen, but the pattern is becoming difficult to ignore. If Armie Hammer concluded that the best comeback vehicle for his career was an anti-Islamic rape-gang thriller, then fellow recently canceled actor Jonathan Majors appears to have embraced a similar lane, starring in the upcoming Daily Wire-produced “Run Hide Fight: Infidels,” which follows a group of “American warriors rising with unbreakable grit and unrelenting firepower” as they battle pro-Palestinian Islamic terrorists.
Coincidence or the early signs of a new filmmaking ecosystem? The industry’s ideological divide increasingly seems to be extending to the kinds of movies being financed, marketed, and targeted at a specific—and very large—demographic that has been turned off by Hollywood and is now looking for alternative entertainment.
