It’s been over a decade since “It Follows” left its mark on US cinema with its unsettling premise of a sexually transmitted curse. We didn’t need a sequel. I like it when a single film can stand on its own. Regardless, “They Follow” is moving forward, set to shoot this summer, with director David Robert Mitchell now confirming the return of key collaborators.
As he tells Empire Magazine, “Maika [Monroe] is back for this, and [cinematographer] Mike [Gioulakis], and the editor, Julio [Julio C. Perez IV],” underscoring that much of the original creative team is returning to preserve the film’s distinctive atmosphere.
One of the biggest returns is the music, with Disasterpeace confirmed to once again compose. Mitchell emphasizes its importance, saying, “Disasterpeace will be doing a score,” and adding, “I wouldn’t want to do a sequel without him.”
Disasterpeace composed a synth-heavy, Carpenter-esque score for “It Follows” and went on to collaborate again with Mitchell on “Under the Silver Lake.” As for Gioulakis, he has since gone on to lens three M. Night Shyamalan films (“Split,” “Glass,” and “Old”), as well as work with Jordan Peele on “Us” and with the Zellner brothers on “Sasquatch Sunset.”
The sequel, which takes place ten years after the events of the first film, has no plot details leaked, which has left many—including myself—curious about what idea Mitchell could have had to justify revisiting this horror classic.
Mitchell is “very proud of the script,” describing it as “its own unique thing, while still being very much connected to the first film,” teasing a continuation that stays rooted in the original’s world while pushing into new territory.
Still, one thing that makes “They Follow” feel at least somewhat promising is the filmmaker behind it. Mitchell is a rule-breaker, and his concise, subtle work on “It Follows” was strong; his follow-up, “Under the Silver Lake,” is also underrated. He’s currently in post-production on “The End of Oak Street,” an ’80s-set time-travel dinosaur movie for Warner Bros starring Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor, slated for an August 2026 release.
