Jesse Eisenberg’s third feature as a director, following “When You Finish Saving the World” and “A Real Pain,” is “The Debut,” originally titled “No One Cares.”
We now have our first posters for the film, which stars Paul Giamatti and Julianne Moore and is being released by A24. The trailer will debut tomorrow, with a fall release currently being targeted.
Contrary to rumors, this upcoming film — based on Eisenberg’s original screenplay — is not technically a musical. Set in “the high-stakes world of community theater,” it follows a painfully awkward housewife (Moore) who is unexpectedly cast in a local production of an original musical and then becomes far too invested in it.
Drew Daniels serves as cinematographer. He previously shot Sean Baker’s last two films, “Anora” and “Red Rocket.” Emil Mosseri composed the score.
A24 is positioning the film for a fall festival premiere, potentially at the Telluride Film Festival before heading to the Toronto International Film Festival. An awards campaign will likely be mounted for the film and its key creative talent.
I do wonder what will end up being A24’s top priority this awards season. They picked up Jordan Firstman’s “Club Kid” out of Cannes, and that seems to be their frontrunner at the moment. They also have Chris Rock’s “Misty Green?” Lance Oppenheim’s “Primetime,” and Edward Berger’s “The Riders,” all potentially set for fall fest premieres.
Below are the two posters released by A24 this morning. I’ll have more on the film tomorrow.
