On Sunday, Timothée Chalamet teased a Monday announcement that would reveal his next film. Most wondered which director he would be teaming up with next, but this morning, a totally unexpected project was revealed.
Chalamet and Selena Gomez are set to star in a new animated film from Illumination, titled “Not Alone,” hitting theaters in April 2027.
Chalamet will voice Joe, an “introverted rocket mechanic who lives a quiet life alone,” according to a press release, while Gomez is Fran, a “brilliant astro-botanist who is developing the world’s first-ever plant-fueled rocket.”
When Joe and Fran team up to prepare for the first launch of the groundbreaking rocket, sparks quickly fly, though neither has much experience when it comes to romance. Things take an unexpected turn when three tiny, mischievous aliens — Dunk, Welly, and Shirm — hide out in Joe’s home while fleeing Zandro, a determined but bumbling interplanetary law officer. As the trio searches for a way back to their home planet, they set their sights on Fran’s rocket as their ticket to safety.
Known for its family-friendly storytelling, colorful animation, and broad comedic appeal, Illumination has become one of animation’s most successful studios thanks to blockbuster franchises such as “Despicable Me,” “Minions,” and “The Secret Life of Pets,” while also finding success with films like “Sing” and “The Super Mario Bros. Movie.”
This is a nice change of pace for Chalamet, who, since 2021, has appeared in eight movies, including his recent streak of roles in “Wonka,” “Dune: Part Two,” “A Complete Unknown,” and “Marty Supreme.”
Up next for Chalamet is the animated film, but in terms of live-action projects, he has “Dune: Part Three” coming out in December and James Mangold’s “High Side,” a motocross saga that will hopefully begin shooting this year.
