A few weeks ago, I posted a reaction to Luca Guadagnino’s “Artificial” that described the film as “The Social Network,” but for the AI era. It dives into the rise of OpenAI and the personalities behind what might end up being the most important tech shift of our time.
Sources are now telling Page Six Hollywood that Amazon/MGM has decided that “Artificial” won’t be released in the fall — instead it is now aiming for an early 2027 release because it “didn’t want the film to go up against [Aaron Sorkin’s] ‘The Social Network’ sequel,” which is set to release in October, given that the two films “share similar themes of cutthroat tech billionaires.”
The film mainly follows Ilya Sutskever (played by Yura Borisov), who essentially carries the first half. He’s portrayed as the idealistic, slightly naive brain of the operation—the one who truly believes in the bigger picture, much like Eduardo Saverin in “The Social Network.” However, as the film progresses, the spotlight gradually shifts to Sam Altman, played by Andrew Garfield, who, interestingly enough, previously portrayed Saverin in “The Social Network.”
“Artificial” found its way to Guadagnino after production on “Sgt. Rock”—the DC Studios film starring Colin Farrell—was scrapped. Rather than wait it out, the director began scouting for a new project he could turn around quickly, ultimately landing on “Artificial,” which started production in summer 2025.
