If you’re among those who have been championing Adam Rehmeier’s “Dinner in America” as passionately as I have, and then “Snack Shack,” then this one’s for you.
Rehmeier’s latest is the romantic crime thriller “Carolina Caroline,” helmed by Rehmeier from a script penned by Tom Dean. Samara Weaving stars with Kyle Gallner, Kyra Sedgwick and Jon Gries among the cast.
A teaser has been released for the film, which is being distributed by Magnolia Pictures. Truthfully, I don’t even have to watch the trailer, you already sold me with a Rehmeier/Weaving team-up.
Now, “Carolina Caroline” premiered at TIFF last year and was sadly lost amid the festival’s relentless wave of Oscar bait, but the write-ups from the few who have seen it have been positive, earning a 100% on Rotten Tomatoes (based on 16 reviews) and 77 on Metacritic (based on 6 critics).
The film revolves around Caroline Daniels (Weaving), a young woman eager to escape her small Texas town, who becomes entangled with a charming but deceptive drifter (Gallner). Together, they embark on a turbulent journey marked by crime, desire, and recklessness across the American Southeast.
Rehmeier has been carving out a niche in the American indie landscape, operating well outside the system with a distinct voice. His most recent film, the coming-of-age comedy “Snack Shack,” was an under-the-radar gem in 2024. He has also already shot his follow-up to “Carolina Caroline,” titled “A Bobby Thing,” which wrapped production in South Africa last fall. That one again stars Kyle Gallner.
“Carolina Caroline” is heading to theaters this summer on June 5.
