The oasis in this year’s otherwise drama-free Oscar season has, without a doubt, been the “Marty Supreme” crew. Props to all of them for making our vitamin-D-free winter a little brighter. No, honestly—the film can speak for itself. I loved it; my second-favorite film of last year. But man, what a breath of fresh air it’s been to watch this campaign self-destruct in real time.
First, Timothée Chalamet posts on his socials a bunch of pumpkin-headed figures playing ping-pong while “I am the clit commander” blares in the background, all while touting in an interview that he’s given “top-level shit” performances this decade.
Meanwhile, his co-star Gwyneth Paltrow dishes about her “palatable” sex scenes in the film, says kissing Chalamet felt like “tongue choreography,” and casually admits she had no idea who he was before working with him on ‘Marty.’
Then there’s director Josh Safdie getting dragged into a Page Six story about an on-set incident on “Good Time” involving alleged misconduct by an actor toward a 17-year-old actress.
And somehow, circling all of this like an alpha predator, you have Kevin O’Leary—self-proclaimed “Mr. Wonderful”—who can’t seem to keep his mouth shut and has turned into a publicist’s worst nightmare.
Very early in the campaign, O’Leary claimed production on ‘Marty’ wasted millions by hiring human extras—money he believes could’ve been saved by using AI-generated stand-ins. In a separate interview, he also said he didn’t like the ending of the film, suggesting it should have concluded with O’Dessa A’zion’s character dying during childbirth.
All this to say: O’Leary is at it again.
His recent comments slamming Billie Eilish’s anti-ICE Grammys speech irritated Mark Ruffalo enough that the actor took to social media to tell O’Leary to “shut the f*ck up.”
“Kevin O’Leary, why don’t you STFU. It’s hilarious,” Ruffalo wrote. “You will go on any show and talk shit about any number of things and smugly expect us to listen to you, but you will dig into a real artist that dwarfs anything you dream of doing for actually saying something that resonates with hundreds of millions of people the world over. It’s astounding the fantasy double standard Kevin O’Leary lives in. You played yourself well in Marty Supreme.”
Ruffalo was reacting directly to comments made by the entrepreneur and “Shark Tank” personality, who recently cautioned Eilish should “shut her mouth” and “just entertain.” Appearing on Fox News, O’Leary issued a blunt warning: “Half the people in politics that you piss off won’t buy your music anymore,” he said. “Don’t be stupid about it—but hey, they don’t listen.”
That’s clearly irked the usually outspoken—and reliably self-righteous—Ruffalo to no end, and he’s finally had enough, calling out O’Leary and comparing him to his character in Marty. You can’t make this stuff up. It’s comedy gold.
Suffice it to say, after all this chaos, I still think Chalamet will win Best Actor on Oscar night.
