I’m seeing that after almost 10 years off, Ron Shelton, 80, is brewing something — a directorial effort that’s supposed to kickstart production in the spring. No word yet on the actors attached, but I’ll update if any further details leak. Shelton’s longtime friend, Frank Marshall, is producing, and the shoot is planned in the Dominican Republic.
Shelton is, of course, the director behind “Bull Durham,” “White Men Can’t Jump,” “Cobb,” “Tin Cup,” and “Dark Blue” (underrated!). He hasn’t helmed a film since 2017’s misbegotten “Just Getting Started,” which starred Morgan Freeman, Tommy Lee Jones, and Rene Russo.
I guess I could have included Shelton in our list of great directors who haven’t released a film in over a decade, but the truth is that Shelton hasn’t released a good film since “Dark Blue,” which came out in 2002 — unless you believe “Hollywood Homicide” is a worthy film.
