Huh?! According to Deadline, Ryan Gosling is in early development on a live-action Flintstones movie centered on an adult Bamm-Bamm.
Is this The Onion?
The news is being met with justified disbelief and confusion: Who was asking for a Bamm-Bamm movie? Is Hollywood now coming up with ideas via a Mad Libs generator? It’s an absurd premise, and yeah, it could work if the filmmakers take a clever, irreverent approach to it — still, why?
Hollywood has hit the bedrock of IP, and Gosling is knee-deep in chasing those checks, which might include a cool $20M for that “Barbie” sequel. He’s also now part of the Star Wars franchise with ‘Starfighter’ set to release next year, not to mention the MCU with ‘Ghost Rider.’
Regardless, Gosling has earned enough clout to make whatever ridiculous thing he wants. Hey, worst-case scenario is simply a bad movie, and the best-case scenario is a genuinely funny one.
Warner Bros.’ obsession with aging IP is very real. Could the announcement be leverage in negotiations over the Barbie sequel? Essentially, Gosling signaling that he’s happy to pursue other projects if Warner Bros. doesn’t make the deal happen? Could be. Unless, he’s madly passionate about playing Bamm-Bamm.
There is, of course, nostalgia for the 1994 Flintstones, starring John Goodman as Fred, with Rick Moranis and Rosie O’Donnell rounding out the cast. That said, the IP is simply too dormant to have much cultural relevance with younger audiences. My bet is that this project will quietly disappear before getting made.
