James Van Der Beek Dies at 48

February 11, 2026 Jordan Ruimy

James Van Der Beek, a familiar face on both the big and small screens, has passed away at 48 after a very public battle with cancer.

He was very open about his fight with cancer, sharing his journey with honesty and courage in the years leading up to his passing. After being diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer in 2023 and publicly revealing his condition in late 2024, Van Der Beek spoke candidly about how the illness changed his perspective on life, family, and faith, even describing the experience as a catalyst for deep personal growth.

Van Der Beek is most famous for his breakout role as Dawson Leery in “Dawson’s Creek” — it’s very hard to describe how that show captured the cultural zeitgeist back in the ‘90s and ‘00s. The series became a defining voice for a generation of teenagers, exploring love, friendship, and identity with an emotional honesty that was rare for the time. In the process, Van Der Beek became a generational TV icon.

“Dawson’s Creek” launched Van Der Beek’s career and opened doors for him to explore roles across film and television. His two most well-known big-screen roles came soon after — “Varsity Blues” and “The Rules of Attraction.” On the television front, he appeared in shows such as “Don’t Trust the B–– in Apartment 23,” “CSI: Cyber,” and “Pose.”

While his co-stars, Michelle Williams and Katie Holmes, went on to other successes, Van Der Beek remained most widely remembered for “Dawson’s Creek,” a show whose impact alone was enough to cement his legacy, and cast a large shadow on the rest of his work.

It’s always sad to lose someone who gave so much to his craft and shared so openly with the world. Van Der Beek was a devoted husband and a loving father of six. The news of his passing is an absolute tragedy.
