Does Anybody Still Want Another ‘Ghostbusters' Movie? Sony Cooking Up ‘Ghostbusters: Nightmare on 34th Street' With ‘Violent Night’ Writer

October 6, 2026 Jordan Ruimy

A new live-action "Ghostbusters" film is reportedly in development, according to scooper DanielRPK. The working title is "Ghostbusters: Nightmare on 34th Street," and the script is being written by Josh Miller, whose credits include "Sonic the Hedgehog 3" and "Violent Night."

That's about all we know. There's no word on whether it continues the storyline of "Afterlife" and "Frozen Empire" or goes off and does its own thing. The title alone suggests a holiday angle, and with Miller having written "Violent Night," I'd be shocked if this isn't a Christmas-set ghost romp.

So, where is this franchise right now? "Frozen Empire" was not good. It made a bit of money, but it felt tired, overstuffed and creatively bankrupt, a franchise running on fumes and nostalgia. Nothing has been officially greenlit since, although director Gil Kenan hinted that more was on the way.

For the record, there have now been four live-action "Ghostbusters" movies, and that's not counting Paul Feig's 2016 female-led reboot, which Sony has quietly swept under the rug.

The more immediate "Ghostbusters" content is actually coming from Netflix. There's "Ghostbusters: Night Shift," a 1990s-set animated series arriving next year, plus "Ecto," an animated feature told from a ghost's point of view. Honestly, it all sounds very dull at this point.

"Frozen Empire" picked up where the previous film left off, moving the action to New York City, the setting of the first two films. Alongside Paul Rudd, Carrie Coon and Kumail Nanjiani, it brought back original cast members Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Sigourney Weaver, Ernie Hudson and Annie Potts.

"Ghostbusters: Afterlife" (2021) grossed $204M worldwide on a $75M budget. "Frozen Empire" (2024) made $200M but was far more expensive, costing $100M. Reviews weren't great for either film, especially the latest, which sits at 42% on Rotten Tomatoes. There's no need for yet another instalment, which is why this rumor should be taken with a major grain of salt.
