Well, Sony Pictures has made it official: Aaron Sorkin’s “The Social Reckoning” has been announced by the studio. The film is set to hit theaters on October 9, 2026.
The cast has also been confirmed. Jeremy Strong will take on the role of Mark Zuckerberg, with Mikey Madison playing whistleblower Frances Haugen, and Jeremy Allen White portraying Wall Street Journal reporter Jeff Horowitz. Bill Burr is also attached in an undisclosed role.
Described as a “companion piece” to “The Social Network,” the film’s October release date does signal Sony’s hopes that it will be in Oscar contention. Production has yet to begin, with cameras scheduled to start rolling on October 20.
Sorkin’s script centers on the fallout covered in The Facebook Files, a series of reports published by The Wall Street Journal in 2021. The articles exposed internal company documents that revealed Facebook’s own awareness of the harm its platform was causing — particularly to teens, developing countries, and the broader global information ecosystem.
Sorkin, who won the Oscar for his screenplay for the 2010 original, will direct this one himself — a shift from Fincher’s meticulous visual style. Since then, Sorkin has directed three films (“Molly’s Game,” “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” “Being the Ricardos”).
The original film helped launch the careers of Andrew Garfield, and Jesse Eisenberg, the latter which earned an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of Zuckerberg — he will be noticeably absent this time around. And let’s be honest: it’s hard to imagine a “spiritual sequel” without both Eisenberg and Fincher.
We’ll see how this one turns out, but there sure is a lot of talent involved in its making.
