Warner Bros. High on Michael Mann’s ‘Heat 2’ Script, Casting Officially Underway

June 25, 2025 Jordan Ruimy

After years of speculation, cryptic interviews, and Mann’s own relentless teases, “Heat 2” is finally moving forward.

According to insiders close to the project, Warner Bros. — despite showing signs of hesitation just a few months ago — is now said to be “extremely enthusiastic” about Mann’s finished script for the long-gestating follow-up to his 1995 crime epic. With the studio fully on board, Mann has officially entered the casting phase.

Mann, now 81, has spent the last few years carefully building the foundation for “Heat 2,” a dual prequel-sequel hybrid based on his 2022 novel co-written with Meg Gardiner. The book charted the early days of Neil McCauley (played by Robert De Niro in the original) and Vincent Hanna (Al Pacino), while also following Hanna’s hunt for a new threat in the aftermath of the original film’s climactic shootout.

We’ve heard whispers about Adam Driver being Mann’s top choice to play the younger McCauley — a casting move that would reunite the director with his “Ferrari” star. No deals have been signed (yet), but that’s where the energy is. As for the younger Vincent Hanna? That role remains a mystery, though several A-listers are reportedly circling.

Warner Bros., which distributed Heat nearly 30 years ago, had been quietly developing the sequel behind the scenes. But with the script now finalized and generating incredibly positive internal response, the studio has greenlit the next phase: finding the cast that can follow in the footsteps of De Niro, Pacino, and Kilmer.

Mann is said to be deeply involved in every step, with the script described as “dense” and “operatic.” Interestingly, despite being one of digital cinema’s earliest adopters, he’s shot almost exclusively digital for over two decades, the filmmaker recently revealed that “Heat 2” will be shot on film, just like the 1995 original. A return to celluloid feels like the right move. And while we’re at it, how about bringing back cinematographer Dante Spinotti? His cool, metallic-blue cityscapes defined the original.

Will the original cast return? Sources are tight-lipped, but don’t rule out present-day flash-forwards with Pacino reprising his role as an older, even more haunted Vincent Hanna. The man himself hasn’t been shy about it. At a recent panel, Pacino said he was “absolutely” on board — if Mann asked.

The timeline? Still fluid. Mann wants to shoot in 2025, likely for a late 2026 release. I’ll have more on “Heat 2” as it develops.
