UPDATE: A24 has acquired the rights to Jeremy Saulnier’s next film, which currently goes by “Untitled Halloween Project.”
According to The InSneider, A24 outbid competitors including Neon, 20th Century Studios, and Netflix—despite Netflix making a competitive offer. However, Netflix’s proposal reportedly lacked a theatrical release, which was a key factor for Saulnier, especially after his previous two films, “Rebel Ridge” and “Hold the Dark,” debuted on the streaming platform.
EARLIER: Last year, Jeremy Saulnier’s “Rebel Ridge” became a breakout hit, racking up over 31M views on Netflix within its first three days and propelling Aaron Pierre into the spotlight—earning him the lead role in HBO’s “Lanterns.” The film’s success left many studios regretting their decision to pass on Saulnier’s film.
Now, it looks like Hollywood isn’t taking any chances with Saulnier’s next work. According to The InSneider, Saulnier’s latest screenplay—an untitled thriller described as a gritty, high-stakes chase story reminiscent of “The Fugitive,” and the visceral intensity that defines Saulnier’s style—is at the center of a fierce bidding war.
While specific plot details remain under wraps, several major players are reportedly vying for the rights. A24, Neon, 20th Century Studios, and Netflix are all in contention. Netflix might seem like the frontrunner, having released Saulnier’s previous two features, but insiders suggest the filmmaker is — wisely— aiming for a theatrical rollout this time around.
Last year, Saulnier spoke with The Playlist about what his next film might be:
I’m currently writing something that’s a little more in the “Green Room” universe. Because with “Rebel Ridge,” I was exploring a new side. I was just tired of everything I do being oppressive. But I’ve kinda gone back. It has to do with music and Halloween and fun shit.
“Rebel Ridge,” which was Saulnier’s first film in over five years, had a tumultuous journey on its way to release. This is the infamous film that had, original lead actor, John Boyega abruptly walking out of the set in 2021, under controversial circumstances. Boyega was soon replaced with Pierre, and filming resumed in early 2022.
News of a new Saulnier project being in the works is music to my ears. His 2014 film, “Blue Ruin,” is a crime-thriller indie masterwork, and 2016’s “Green Room,” a dark and nasty neo-Nazi revenge tale, played like an avant-garde horror movie. Saulnier’s knack for detailed visceral violence makes you feel every gunshot, every stabbing of the knife, every punch. He’s a major talent.
