UPDATE: Actual runtime is 128 minutes. I had it confirmed by a test attendee that it clocked in at around 2 hours and 20 minutes without credits, so they must have cut around 20 minutes to reach the final runtime since then.
EARLIER: Yes, there is an actual “Digger” fan account on X, one that posts any and all updates regarding Alejandro González Iñárritu’s upcoming Tom Cruise-starring film.
One such update came recently regarding the film’s runtime, which, according to Odeon, is 2 hours and 40 minutes. According to the account, this lines up with the runtimes they’d heard from test screenings.
Iñárritu is certainly one to indulge. His last film, “Bardo,” ran 159 minutes, while “The Revenant” was 156 minutes, “Biutiful” 148 minutes, “Babel” 143 minutes, and “Amores Perros” 154 minutes. In fact, the shortest film of Iñárritu’s career is “Birdman,” which clocked in at exactly two hours.
Speaking of, I hear a new trailer for ”Digger” will be coning this month, probably around the release for “End of Oak Street.” The film is entirely skipping the fall fests, but a major best actor campaign will be mounted for Cruise.
A Warner Bros. rep had told Puck’s Matt Belloni that “Digger” cost $125M to produce, but Belloni was “suspicious,” saying he’s heard the final price tag was “much higher.” Meanwhile, Page Six Hollywood’s also had a Warners rep giving them the $125M figure, but a studio insider claimed the film was actually “pushing $200M,” calling the situation “insane.”
Who knows what to believe. The fact remains that “Digger” is banking on strong reviews, and if you take the business aspect out of it and view the project purely from an artistic perspective, it’s great to see a major studio taking this kind of risk.
“Digger” stars Cruise in the lead role. The rest of the ensemble includes Sandra Hüller, Jesse Plemons, John Goodman, Riz Ahmed, Michael Stuhlbarg, Sophie Wilde, and Emma D’Arcy. It hits theaters on October 2.
