Coming off the success of “Sinners,” Ryan Coogler is prepping a reboot he teased ages ago. “The X-Files” is officially his next project.
Casting now appears to be underway, as reports indicate that Danielle Deadwyler is in talks to join Coogler’s “X-Files” reboot as one of the two lead investigators.
If you’re wondering what exactly Coogler’s version of “The X-Files” will look like, join the club—details are scarce. What we do know is that Chris Carter, the original creator of the alien-hunting classic, has said that Coogler plans to bring in a more diverse cast. Deadwyler’s potential casting seems to confirm that.
That said, Coogler is now giving more details about his “X-Files” series, which he has already written and says will have a similar structure to the original show (via Happy Sad Confused podcast).
We intend on having both monsters of the week and also the overarching conspiracy […] it wouldn’t be X-Files if we didn’t do both. That’s what I’m doing now. “Black Panther 3” comes after that.
Coogler describes the series as “the show that gave us Vince Gilligan,” adding that he “got a chance to talk” to Gilligan and receive advice on how to make television, before concluding, “I’m hyped, bro.”
When asked whether David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson, who played Mulder and Scully in the original series, might return for his reboot, Coogler neither confirmed nor denied their participation.
I’m big fan of Gillian’s, I’m a big fan of David’s. That’s all I can say
To be fair, fans may have assumed the project quietly died in development hell—especially since the last solid update came back in 2021, when Coogler’s Proximity Media signed a deal with Disney. And, in case you’ve blocked it out, the last time we saw Mulder and Scully together was in 2018. Seven years later, it’s now aiming to shoot next year.
As for “Black Panther 3,” which is rumored to feature Denzel Washington in a supporting role, it is set for release in spring 2028.
