Merry Christmas!
“Marty Supreme” finally arrived last night in wide release. It earned $2M in previews in 2,668 theaters. That’s ahead of Chalamet’s “A Complete Unknown,” released at this same time last year, which had a $1.4M Wednesday.
This will be a space for our readers to chime in with their thoughts on the film. What did you think? Is it, as I believe, one of the best films of 2025?
The marketing campaign has been intense on this one, the results are good, and judging by presales, there are a lot of sold-out showings across the East and West Coasts today. Some are saying it’s headed toward a $10M Thursday.
The balls-to-walls marketing for ‘Marty’ has been highly entertaining to witness. A key promotional push centered on a ‘Marty’ blimp that toured around the country. Reports suggest A24 spent $100,000 a day to keep the blimp in the air. Chalamet also partnered with designer Nahmias on limited-edition sweatshirts that gained traction on social media. The Empire State Building was lit up in orange—along with the Sphere in Las Vegas, which Chalamet stood atop.
This is A24’s most expensive movie ever, with a reported production cost of $90M, but it also arrives at a moment when the studio has struggled to expand beyond its indie-boutique roots into full-fledged major-studio territory. ‘Marty’ might just be the hit they desperately needed.
Much of the film’s success will depend on how audiences react to the movie—which is great. The Rotten Tomatoes user score is 87%, which is a good start, especially compared to the 52% Josh Safdie’s previous film, “Uncut Gems,” received from audiences.
Meanwhile, in case you’re wondering, “Avatar Fire and Ash” took in $10M on Christmas Eve, bringing it to a total of almost $130M after one week in theaters. Great news for James Cameron.
