Todd Field Working on a New Film? Austin Butler Talks Suggest He’s Not Retired

December 19, 2025 Jordan Ruimy

So, it turns out that Todd Field might direct again — and it might happen sooner than we all expected.

Jeff Sneider, via The Hot Mic, heard a rumor and tracked it down this week: apparently, Field was talking to Austin Butler last year about starring in his next movie. We don’t really know where those talks stand right now. No casting is underway.

That said, Butler has a busy 2026 ahead with “Miami Vice,” and potentially — though still just rumored — “Heat 2.” Field is also known for taking his time between projects, so we might not hear much about this one for a while.

Still, the big lede here is that Field might not be retired after all. You may remember that in March 2023, Field mentioned that “TÁR” was “highly likely” to be his final film. He gave no specific reason as to why he would supposedly quit directing, and many were surprised, given that his stock had risen considerably after such a widely acclaimed film.

A few months later, Martin Scorsese mentioned that he was working on bringing author Marilynne Robinson’s “Gilead” trilogy to the big screen, with Field writing and possibly directing one of the films (“Gilead”), while Scorsese was set to helm “Home.”

“TÁR” was this masterfully conceived, and formally bold character study about cancel culture, starring Cate Blanchett — one of the very best films the 2020s have given us. Field's slowburner of a film left it up to the viewer to decide whether it was anti-cancel culture or a tongue-in-cheek condemnation of Cate Blanchett‘s brilliant but prickly conductor Lydia Tar.

Field has directed only three films in 25 years — “In the Bedroom” (2001), “Little Children” (2006), and “TÁR” (2022). However, thanks to the latter, he’s arguably never been hotter. Cinephiles want another Todd Field movie, and we just might be getting one in the near future.
