Jesse Armstrong's Post-Succession HBO Movie to Star Steve Carell

March 4, 2025 Jordan Ruimy

UPDATE: Steve Carell, Jason Schwartzman, Cory Michael Smith and Ramy Youssef will star in Armstrong’s HBO movie. Production is set to begin this month in Utah.

In addition, a cover of Armstrong’s screenplay was posted online by HBO with the title redacted out by snow. Armstrong is set to write and direct — this will be be his feature directorial debut.

EARLIER: Many wondered what “Succession” creator Jesse Armstrong would be doing next. Today, we learned that Armstrong’s post-“Succession” project will be an HBO movie about the 2008 market crash.

Armstrong’s film is said to revolve around four friends who meet up during the turmoil of an ongoing international financial crisis. Although the script is still being written, there are already plans to shoot this one in 2025.

Armstrong’s previous screen credits include writing political satires such as “Four Lions,” and “In The Loop,” the latter, which he cowrote with “Veep” creator Armando Iannucci, landed him a best adapted screenplay Oscar nomination.

Armstrong’s “Succession,” which aired for four seasons on HBO, and finished its run in 2023, accumulated 75 Emmy nominations and 19 wins. It’s the most acclaimed TV series of the last 10 years, and was seen by many as the end of the “golden age” era of television which was heralded by the likes of “The Sopranos,” “Breaking Bad,” “The Wire” and “Mad Men.”
