Cannes 2021: Joel Coen’s ‘The Tragedy of Macbeth’ Screened; Julia Ducournau’s ‘Titane’ Set For Official Competition

May 17, 2021 Jordan Ruimy

After its production got delayed last year due to France locking down, it does look as though Julia Ducournau’s “Titane” will be part of this coming July’s Cannes Film Festival. At least, that’s according to French film rag “Les Inrockuptibles.” Ducournau’s festival breakout “Raw” turned many heads back in 2017 and sources says that buzz around “Titane” is so deafening that an official competition slot is very much on the table.

Meanwhile, Joel Coen’s “The Tragedy of Macbeth,” starring Frances McDormand and Denzel Washington, has been screened for Cannes boss Thierry Fremaux. Whether it actually makes it to Cannes is a whole other story since Apple TV, who recently bought the rights to the film, may want to wait it out for the fall festivals.

Ive updated our chart of the most likely films to make it to Cannes official competition this coming July. There have been a lot of pieces from the trades speculating inaccurately about some films. I’d rather be on the cautious side, but very well aware that last-minute changes can happen in the blink of an eye by Fremaux and his selection committee. However, as we speak, these are the titles with the best shot on 05.17.21:

The following 21 films are the most serious contenders:

“The French Dispatch” (Wes Anderson)
“Annette” (Leos Carax)
“Ahed’s Knee” (Nadav Lapid)
“Memoria” (Apichatpong Weerasethakul)
“Benedetta” (Paul Verhoeven)
“Tromperie” (Arnaud Desplechin)
“Tres Piani” (Nanni Moretti)
“Where is Anne Frank?” (Ari Folman)
“A Hero” (Asghar Farhadi)
“Triangle of Sadness” (Ruben Östlund)
“Bergman Island” (Mia Hansen-Love)
“Flag Day” (Sean Penn)
“Nobody’s Hero” (Alain Guiraudie)
“Drive My Car” (Ryûsuke Hamaguchi)
“Petrov’s Flu” (Kirill Serebrennikov)
“Decision To Leave” (Park Chan-wook)
“Another World” (Stephane Brizé)
“Paris, 13th District” (Jacques Audiard)
“Titane” (Julia Ducournau)
“Macbeth” (Joel Coen)
“In Front of Your Face” (Hong San-soo)

Very possible:

“De Son Vivant” (Emmanuelle Bercot)
“The Worst Person in the World” (Joachim Trier)
“Mona Lisa And The Blood Moon” (Ana Lily Amirpoor)
“Everything Went Fine” (François Ozon)
“Wicked Games” (Ulrich Seidl)
“Algerien Par Accident” (Karim Aïnouz)

Longshots include mostly American productions:

”Soggy Bottom” (Paul Thomas Anderson)
“The Way of the Wind” (Terrence Malick)
“The Power of the Dog” (Jane Campion)
“Blonde” (Andrew Dominik)
”The Hand of God” (Paolo Sorrentino)
“The Green Knight” (David Lowery)
“Last Night in Soho” (Edgar Wright)
“The Souvenir Pt. 2” (Joanna Hogg)
