‘The Trial of the Chicago 7’: Aaron Sorkin's Legal Drama Looks Like Pure Oscar-Bait [Trailer]

September 13, 2020 Jordan Ruimy

Here’s the first teaser for Aaron Sorkin’s Netflix-distributed “The Trial of the Chicago 7.” This is Sorkin’s second film as a director, after 2018’s “Molly’s Game,” but, first and foremost, he’s known as the legendary screenwriter of “The Social Network,” and “The West Wing.”

“The Trial of the Chicago 7,” written and directed by Sorkin, is the true story of a group of seven activists that were charged by the federal government with inciting a riot stemming from anti-Vietnam War protests during the 1968 Democratic National Convention.

What sticks out like a sore thumb in this otherwise well-edited and excitable trailer is Sacha Baron Cohen, not to mention that wig he’s wearing (or is that his real hair?). Otherwise, bring it on, let’s see if this movie is the stuff that Oscars are made of. The rest of the film’s cast includes Eddie Redmayne, Jeremy Strong, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Frank Langella, William Hurt, Michael Keaton, and Mark Rylance.

Earlier in the year, Netflix had bought the film Paramount Pictures for a reported $56 million. Studios are quite clearly panicking at the moment, which means streaming platforms such as Netflix are trying to take advantage of that panic by buying up 2020 releases. After all, is said and done, we might have to call next year’s Oscars, the Netflix awards.

The streaming giant is set to release Sorkin’s Oscar-baity film on September 25.

And so, after the critical-acclaim of Spike Lee‘s “Da 5 Bloods,” Netflix is about to have a supercharged fall with David Fincher‘s “Mank,” Charlies Kaufman’s “I’m Thinking of Ending Things,” Ramin Bahrani’s “White Tiger,” Ron Howard’s “Hillbilly Elegy,” Ben Wheatley’s “Rebecca,” and George C. Wolfe’s “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.”
