It’s been a three-year wait for “Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse,” and fans finally got first-look footage today — but it wasn’t the way Sony intended.
Footage from the third ‘Spider-Verse’ movie leaked online Friday. It appears to be the footage Sony Pictures Animation privately presented at CinemaCon in April. There’s an extended scene from the beginning of the movie, followed by sizzle-reel footage of the sequel.
Sony began issuing takedowns as copies spread across various accounts — but it was too little, too late. One of the more popular postings is still up, with 17K likes and counting. Co-writer and producer Chris Miller vented his frustration on social media: “Not a fan of leaks of unfinished, not fully rendered footage,” Miller wrote on X.
‘Beyond the Spider-Verse’ was initially supposed to come out in 2024, then 2025, rumored for 2026, and then finally settled with 2027.
Last year, reports indicated that Sony had scrapped most of ‘Beyond the Spider-Verse’ for “creative reasons,” and, given the detailed animation that was required, the movie would not be released for another few years. A few months later, another report insinuated that Sony had actually demanded for the ENTIRE ‘Beyond’ script to be rewritten. This meant that reels of animated footage had to be thrown out. The studio was also said to be undecided on the film's climax.
The visionary “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” was a commercial and critical success back in the summer of 2023 — appearing on hundreds of top 10 lists and grossing over $690M worldwide.
“Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse” is currently expected to be released on June 18, 2027.
