Rachel Brosnahan, of “Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” fame, leads the crime thriller “I’m Your Woman.”Opening the upcoming AFI Film Festival on October 15th, the film positions Brosnahan as a mob boss’ wife who becomes an unwitting accomplice in her husband’s crimes. Judging by the release of today’s trailer for “I Am Your Woman,” this has none of the melancholic allure of ‘Maisel’ and rather goes down the gritty dealings that cemented her breakthrough role in ‘House of Cards.”

These are trying times, my friends. The theatrical experience has been all, but DEAD since March. The COVID-19 pandemic has shut down the industry as a whole in favor of the digital and streaming distribution of films. Christopher Nolan tried to save the day by releasing “Tenet” in late August and, although it amassed a whopping $300 million outside the United States, domestically Nolan’s film mightily struggled, barely amassing $40 million dollars as of this article going live. The domino-effect that Nolan so desperately wanted for cinema failed and now we are all left wondering if this is very much the end of movie theaters as we know it.

It's been more than 5 years since George Miller gave us his masterpiece, "Mad Max: Fury Road." We all expected his next film to be the "Mad Max: Wasteland," alas that project has had so many delays, due in part to legal issues, that its future has been in limbo for a few years now, that is until today.

“Coming 2 America” is skipping theaters and headed to Amazon. This truly is the end of theatrical, or, at least, the way and shape it used to be before the pandemic hit.

After the over-the-top reaction it received at this past January’s Sundance Film Festival, it does look as though critics are slowly coming back to their sense in regards to “Nine Days.” Its Rotten Tomatoes score is now down to 86%, whereas its 77 Metacritic score is still overtly high, albeit based on just 6 reviews. The unwarranted buzz at Park City resulted in the film receiving the screenwriting award

“Promising Young Woman” is arriving in theaters on Christmas Day via Focus Features. This is a gamble since we don’t even know how many theaters will be open nationwide by then, but I’m hearing a digital release is also in the books, maybe that same week. The film, which I saw this past January at the Sundance Film Festival, has a 74 on Metacritic and a 92% on Rotten Tomatoes. No, it’s not the second coming of cinema, as some have over-excitingly pointed out, but it is a delightfully slick B-movie with an effective performance from Carey Mulligan. Here’s what I had to say about it on 01.31.20:

Disney has already had two blockbusters skip theaters entirely and go straight to Disney+ (“Artemis Fowl.” and “Mulan”) this year, which begged me to ask the obvious question, would Pixar’s “Soul” be next? This past July, I contacted my source at the Mouse House who confirmed to me that there were indeed plans to move “Soul” to the streaming service. I reported about it and was unsurprisingly met with negative responses, mostly from people who couldn’t accept the fact that Disney would just dump such a prize-worthy feature like that as streaming content.

We now have our first official trailer for David Fincher’s “Mank.” I’m crossing my fingers for a potential press screening in theaters, but chances are I will most likely be watching this on my 55-inch 4k screen at home. I can’t fathom not watching “Mank” on the big screen, but, alas, that is what will likely happen as Netflix won’t be releasing it theatrically, and not because of the pandemic, but because they would rather we all stay at home and revel in n the beautiful black and white frames via our television — that’s their model and they are sticking with it.

I personally couldn’t care less about what the 64-year-old actor did or has done publicly. All I know is that he still has the chops to lead a movie. Ever since attempting a comeback, after being caught on tape slurring anti-semitic and just plain racist remarks, Gibson has starred in three down-and-dirty, but immensely watchable, B-movies (“Get the Gringo,” “Blood Father” and, especially “Dragged Across Concrete.”) and three absolutely terrible stinkers (“Ther Expendables,” “Daddy’s Home,” “Force of Nature”).

Read more‘Tenet' Blu-ray Release Date Set For December 15, 2020
I‘m not sure what the plan is when it comes to the future theatrical run of Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet.” It has yet to open in the two biggest movie markets in the U.S. (New York City and Los Angeles) and the WB seems to be playing it by ear every week. Fact of the matter is this, NY and L.A. will most likely not be reopening their cinemas before next year, that’s almost a given now. The WB must surely know that, which is why I was not surprised to learn today that they are waving their white flag, calling it a day, and sending “Tenet” straight to Blu-ray in mid-December. This is surely very exciting news for Nolan fans who didn’t have the chance to go to theaters to watch "Tenet.” This is bad news for the theatrical experience — I hate to say it, moviegoing is being murdered because of this pandemic, and, when theaters reopen, it will be a very different world for cinema.
