UPDATE: “Supergirl” had an even worse second weekend than we originally suspected. Yesterday, Warner Bros. reported $9.6M, but revised numbers today put it at $8.6M, an 77% drop. The film currently sits at $99M worldwide against a $170–185M budget.
EARLIER: The July 4 weekend box office will be dominated by two animated films. There’s “Minions & Monsters,” now in theaters and aiming for a $37M three-day total, and “Toy Story 5,” in its third weekend, looking at around $31M.
Then there’s “Supergirl,” coming off a disastrous $37M opening last weekend and now heading for a steep drop, with a projected second weekend of only $10M+. That would be a decline of about 73%—not a good sign. It only earned $2.2M on Thursday, and so far, nothing seems to be going right for this DCU film, which will likely lose a significant number of screens next Friday.
So far, “Supergirl” has made $48M domestically and $86M worldwide. The budget, depending on the estimate, is anywhere between $170M and $186M. Some believed it could reach $200M by the end of its run, but it’s increasingly unclear whether that will actually happen.
It’s official, Ryan Gosling has joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He will play Ghost Rider in a new standalone movie, directed by Shawn Levy. A 2027 shoot is planned.
