If you’re confused about the current status of Michael Mann’s “Heat 2,” particularly regarding the casting—which has been all over the place over the last three years—there’s a very good reason for that.
Kris Tapley, a former journalist with connections to Mann’s circle, has gone on X to clear some things up. It turns out that the casting process for “Heat 2” is, um, highly fluid, with several major actors being considered for multiple roles at the same time.
According to Tapley, the final lineup depends largely on Leonardo DiCaprio’s schedule. The few roles he describes as effectively settled are Christian Bale as Vincent Hanna, formerly played by Al Pacino in the 1995 crime classic, and Jason Clarke being lined up for the role of Nate, the veteran criminal fixer originally played by Jon Voight in “Heat.”
Regarding the central question of who will play Neil McCauley, Robert De Niro’s original role, that’s where the DiCaprio dilemma comes in. DiCaprio has reportedly expressed interest in playing either Neil or Chris Shiherlis, formerly portrayed by Val Kilmer. It all depends on DiCaprio’s schedule and how many months he is willing to commit to filming. Mann is planning a six- to seven-month production across multiple countries. Chris would require a heavier workload, as he is more of a main character in “Heat 2” than Neil.
If DiCaprio ultimately chooses Neil, then Adam Driver—who is also interested in the role—would likely move to another major part rather than leave the project entirely, most likely Otis Wardell, the story’s primary antagonist.
It’s a highly unusual game of musical chairs for a major Hollywood production, especially one budgeted at nearly $200M. However, Amazon/MGM appears to be giving Mann the flexibility he needs to make the project work, regardless of how the casting ultimately shakes out.
I gather that one of—if not the main—reasons Amazon/MGM greenlit the project was DiCaprio’s involvement. Mann needs to have him in this film in some capacity, which is probably why he has been given so much flexibility—and time—to decide which role he wants to play.
This latest update comes less than 24 hours after Mann posted an image of himself location scouting for “Heat 2” in Mexico. The film is expected to begin shooting in September, and with DiCaprio having recently wrapped Martin Scorsese’s “What Happens at Night,” that would give the actor only a four-month break between the two projects.
