We have an update on that untitled Martin Scorsese Hawaii-set mobster movie.
That film’s writer, Nick Bilton, was just hired by CBS News chief Bari Weiss as the new executive producer of “60 Minutes.” Nick Bilton, a tech reporter, is mostly known in Hollywood as a staff writer on HBO’s “The Idol” and for producing documentaries on social media influencers. Somehow, Bilton found himself as the main scribe for Scorsese’s Hawaii-set period mobster movie, which is set to star Leonardo DiCaprio, Dwayne Johnson, and Emily Blunt.
Puck’s Matt Belloni confirms the film is still in active development at 20th Century, but Bilton is expected to turn in a major script revision in about a month. If Disney greenlights the movie, which I don’t see why they wouldn’t, it will be fast-tracked, with Bilton also attached as a producer.
Last year, Johnson felt confident that the film would begin Hawaii-set production in 2026. Oh, and he has apparently co-written the screenplay with Bilton. The film is reported to have $200M above-the-line expenses on this movie
The story centers on the Hawaiian crime syndicate that operated during the 1960s and 1970s, which the film will adapt. The organization, known as The Company, was led by Wilford “Nappy” Pulawa—the first and only Hawaiian mob boss in history.
Scorsese is currently in post-production on the DiCaprio/Jennifer Lawrence-starring “What Happens at Night” over at Apple.
