‘Hooters: The Movie’ Is Now in the Works, Because Why Not?

Hollywood has officially run out of ideas. Or, at the very least, it has reached the point where the origin story of Hooters is now being made as a feature film.

According to Deadline, “Hooters: The Movie” is currently in the works, with casting underway and production eyed for November. The independently produced film — where’s Angel Studios when you need them? — is being mounted by Hooters’ original founders.

Jon Rosenbaum, whose credits include “Woody Woodpecker Goes to Camp” and “Benchwarmers 2: Breaking Balls” — great sign of quality — is directing from a screenplay by Ed Droste, Phil Olson, and Chuck Melcher. Not a single woman involved creatively on this one.

And yes, if we’re making a Hooters movie, can we please cast Sydney Sweeney? At the very least, give Christina Hendricks a call.

For some of our puzzled international readers, Hooters is an American restaurant chain known for its chicken wings and, most notably, its scantily clad waitresses, officially known as “Hooters Girls.” The chain has been infamously dubbed a “breastaurant.” Think “Coyote Ugly,” but with chicken wings being served.

Per Deadline, the film follows Ted and Lenny, two lifelong friends from Iowa who accidentally build a national restaurant empire after Ted becomes infatuated with Diane, a woman he spots in a spring break commercial. Their road trip to Clearwater Beach leads to the founding of Hooters, with Diane becoming the first Hooters Girl, though their new empire is soon threatened by the federal government.

Based on the filmmakers’ own description, the Hooters Girls aren’t exactly incidental to the story: according to Droste, they are “the real stars.”

Droste, who is himself a Hooters co-founder and producer, says the movie will show how the founders were “just some guys who didn’t know what we were doing,” promising plenty of drama, heart, and fun. He also describes Hooters as “America’s oasis in good times and bad.”
