Coming off his breakout feature directorial debut, “Companion,” released in 2025 to strong reviews, Drew Hancock has set up his next film, according to The InSneider.
Lily James has landed the lead role in Hancock’s “Seasons,” a supernatural horror movie set up at Amazon/MGM. Hancock will write and direct, with producers James Wan and Michael Clear attached.
The story follows a couple who move into their dream home in Idaho, only to discover that ancient spirits inhabit their valley, and that survival means submitting to increasingly disturbing rituals with each turn of the season.
The project was originally set up at Netflix in July 2020 and is based on a Reddit short story by Matt Query (“My Wife and I Bought a Ranch”), which went viral and caught the attention of literary manager and producer Scott Glassgold, who signed Query and set up a seven-figure auction. The idea later grew into a novel titled “Old Country,” co-authored with his brother Harrison, who co-wrote the screenplay with Hancock.
James broke out in Disney’s live-action “Cinderella” before starring in “Downton Abbey” and “Baby Driver.” She earned Emmy and Golden Globe nominations for “Pam & Tommy” and recently appeared in “The Iron Claw” and “Relay.” Most recently seen as Bumble founder Whitney Wolfe Herd in “Swiped,” she will next star opposite Pierce Brosnan in the “Cliffhanger” remake and in Takashi Miike’s thriller “Bad Lieutenant: Tokyo.”
However, the real draw of “Seasons” will be Hancock, who delivered a sharp, twist-heavy genre piece with “Companion.” The tonal balance between sci-fi and thriller was particularly effective in that film, and Hancock confidently steered a high-concept, low-budget premise into a tense, character-driven story. It marked a breakout moment for Hancock, further suggesting he is emerging as a filmmaker to watch.
