Brad Pitt potentially has three films coming out this year: “The Adventures of the Cliff Booth,” “The Riders” (still undated), and “The Heart of the Beast.” A trailer has just been released for ‘Beast,’ which is directed by David Ayer.
Written by newcomer Cameron Alexander and co-produced by Damien Chazelle, “Heart of the Beast” follows a former Army Special Forces soldier (Pitt) and his retired combat dog as they battle for survival after a plane crash deep in the unforgiving Alaskan wilderness. JK Simmons has small supporting role.
The film has tested fairly well over the last few months. It hasn’t been getting spectacular scores, but most people seem to like it, and it tugs at the heartstrings while also delivering its fair share of thrills. It plays like a PG-13 version of “The Grey.”
Judging by the trailer, this could be decent. Anything Brad Pitt stars in will be of interest to me, and the dog seems to steal the show here. It’s the kind of token “dad movie,” and that could either be a good thing or a bad thing.
Pitt and Ayer previously collaborated on 2014’s “Fury,” a WWII epic that grossed over $200M worldwide. In fact, it’s probably Ayer’s best film. The filmmaker’s other credits include “Harsh Times,” “Street Kings,” “End of Watch,” and “The Beekeeper.” Let’s not mention “Suicide Squad,” which Ayer has now completely disowned.
“Heart of the Beast” hits theaters on September 25.
