Greg Mottola Tipped to Direct DC Studios’ ‘Deathstroke and Bane’ Movie

May 8, 2026 Jordan Ruimy

According to Deadline, Greg Mottola is currently a frontrunner to potentially helm the untitled ‘Deathstroke and Bane’ film over at DC Studios.

That said, although Mottola is the favorite, multiple other filmmakers are also in consideration, especially with no script yet delivered and no formal deals in place.

The idea for a Deathstroke and Bane movie first surfaced in September 2024 under the leadership of James Gunn and Peter Safran at DC Studios. The screenplay was reportedly being developed by Matthew Orton, known for his work on Marvel’s Moon Knight, signaling an early attempt to shape a villain-focused entry in the new DC slate.

The film would bring Bane back to the big screen for the first time since “The Dark Knight Rises,” where he was played, inaudibly, by Tom Hardy. Mottola, a wonderful indie director, is already part of the DC Studios ecosystem after directing episodes of “Peacemaker.”

That said, Mottola’s bread and butter is comedy, with a filmography filled with gems such as “Superbad,” “Adventureland,” “The Daytrippers,” and “Confess, Fletch.” Bane is the total opposite of a laugh. We’ll see how this project turns out.

We can now add “Deathstroke and Bane” to the list of DCU titles seemingly moving forward in the development pipeline. The DCU launched last year with “Superman,” with “Supergirl” and “Clayface” arriving this year, along with a “Superman” sequel slated for next summer. One might suspect “Wonder Woman” could be next.

The encouraging part is that Gunn isn’t hiring total hacks to direct DCU movies; he’s sought out filmmakers like Mottola, Luca Guadagnino, James Mangold, and Craig Gillespie to help him out. Maybe Zach Cregger will be added next, as he hasn’t been shy about his desire to pitch a Gotham-set movie to Gunn.
