Here’s another hot package (via Variety). Miles Teller and Eddie Redmayne are in talks to star in “Star One,” a spy thriller directed by Doug Liman and set to be introduced to buyers at Cannes.
The film, written by David Coggeshall, follows two mismatched CIA agents—Teller as a charismatic, risk-taking operative and Redmayne as a disciplined strategist—who must collaborate on a high-stakes mission transporting arms through thousands of miles of hostile territory, framed as the untold story of a rare intelligence award tied to a significant but little-known modern operation.
Liman is currently shooting the controversial movie “Bitcoin,” which features AI-generated backgrounds and stars Casey Affleck, Gal Gadot, and Pete Davidson—yeah, they’re really asking for it with that one. Regardless, I would assume “Star One” or “Edge of Tomorrow 2” will be next up for Liman.
Unless …Liman’s long-gestating underwater thriller “Deeper,” starring Tom Cruise, which hit choppy waters last year when it was shelved by Warner Bros. over a staggering $275M budget request, finds a new home—which is what Cruise is currently trying to do over at Paramount.
And really, maybe it’s just pure nostalgia for the days when Hollywood actually cranked out filmmakers whose bread and butter were adult dramas and thrillers, but Liman is certainly one of the rare ones left still getting these projects greenlit.
I’ve always had a soft spot for Liman. His career has had its fair share of stumbles—“Jumper,” anyone?—but he’s never been one to take the straight path. From the sharp, talky rhythms of “Swingers” to the kinetic action of “The Bourne Identity,” the chaotic energy of “Go,” the sci-fi theatrics of “Edge of Tomorrow,” and the underrated double bill of “American Made” and “The Wall,” Liman has been nothing but consistent in an uncertain time for his kind of filmmaking.
