Here is the moment you’ve all been waiting for: a trailer for Uwe Boll’s “Citizen Vigilante.” Yes, the master of disaster has teamed up with Armie Hammer for what promises to be the absolute perfect comeback vehicle for the canceled actor.
After months of insisting that the film — originally titled “The Dark Knight” — would not be changing its title, despite a cease-and-desist from Warner Bros., Boll finally gave in to the studio’s demands and dropped it. “Citizen Vigilante” is what it’s going by now.
Boll describes his latest film as a return to the days of “Rampage,” meaning it’s a “very dark and violent movie” that tackles the current “landscape in Europe,” one shaped by the “migrant situation,” including “rapes and knife attacks.”
Citizen Vigilante”, is a “Death Wish” for the 21st Century. The movie follows vigilante Sanders (Golden Globe nominee Armie Hammer), who takes justice in his own hands and hunts down criminals. While Sanders gains more and more fame, and the public sees him as a hero, interpol chief Henry (Costas Mandylor) believes he is a threat to society and is circling in on him.
“Citizen Vigilante” is set to be Boll’s 37th feature film. The German-born filmmaker is mostly known for his ill-received 2000s adaptations of video game franchises, all of which were critical and commercial disasters. He retired in 2016 to become a restaurateur, but returned to filmmaking with “First Shift” (the glorious trailer).
A few years ago, Boll proclaimed himself to be “the only genius in the whole fucking [movie] business” and said that other directors, such as Michael Bay and Eli Roth, are “fucking retards.” How could he not have such high confidence in himself? Especially after releasing 2011’s “Auschwitz,” which he proclaimed to be his “masterpiece.” It certainly was the most serious and sober film of his career — a 73-minute Holocaust movie that only a filmmaker like Boll could pull off.
Boll’s past films, “House of the Dead” and “Alone in the Dark,” both appear on IMDb’s “Bottom 100” film list. He once called one of his major detractors, Ain’t It Cool News’ Harry Knowles, a “retard.” When Wired magazine published a negative review of “Postal,” Boll responded with an infamous email:
You don’t understand anything about movies and you are an untalented wannabe filmmaker with no balls and no understanding what POSTAL is. You don't see courage because you are nothing. and no go to your mom and fuck her ...because she cooks for you now since 30 years ..so she deserves it.
This all led to Boll “challenging” his critics to “put up or shut up.” In June 2006, he challenged his five harshest critics to 10-round boxing matches. One of them was our very dear friend, Jeff Sneider. Boll won all five bouts. Sneider lost by technical knockout.
Meanwhile, Hammer has opened up about the “brutal experience” he endured after sexual assault allegations against him surfaced, saying he had been “canceled” and left “broke.” By 2023, the once-rising Hollywood star had gone from leading roles to working a working a desk job as a “concierge” at a hotel in the Cayman Islands.
Last year, Hammer has claimed that his career is picking up steam again, and that he no longer feels “canceled,” to the point where he had started turning down roles because of his busy schedule. A few days later, Hammer signed on for Boll’s “Citizen Vigilante.”
“Citizen Vigilante” is set to be released this summer via Quiver.
