Here’s an interesting tidbit from that extensive Empire podcast interview with James Cameron (via The Playlist).
Apparently, Cameron and Robert Rodriguez are discussing an extremely fast-paced filmmaking project that they hope to shoot in just 17 days.
“Robert Rodriguez and I are talking about doing something that’s so blindingly fast that, you know, we’re just going to do the whole thing in like 17 days,” Cameron said. “Because I really like the experience on ‘Hit Me Hard and Soft.’ I shot a whole movie in six days. I’m like, what the fuck takes four years?”
Now that ‘Avatar 4’ is more or less on pause, Cameron will probably try to concentrate on something else — maybe direct “Ghosts of Hiroshima,” or, hell, why not tackle “The Devils,” or even that ‘Terminator’ reboot he keeps mentioning. All of those projects would likely take much longer than 17 days to shoot, so this collaboration with Rodriguez is most likely something that has yet to be announced.
Yesterday, I reported that Robert Rodriguez was set to direct “Incognito,” an action film starring Michael Peña and Jessica Alba, with production scheduled to begin in June in Austin. Maybe this is that project?
Regardless, something non-Avatar is likely coming from Cameron—he’s taking a break from Pandora while he figures out how to make those films cheaper and faster to produce.
It’s been almost 30 years since we last got a non-Avatar film from Cameron, who turns 72 this summer; his last feature not set in Pandora was Titanic. Unless you count the documentaries he’s released over the past three decades, which I don’t. The clock is ticking, and he’ll need to move quickly on something.
