Todd Haynes’ ‘De Noche’ Rumored to Shoot in Black and White for 1930s Detective Noir

April 8, 2026 Jordan Ruimy

This is quite interesting. Just a rumor, but one which is gaining traction. Todd Haynes might be shooting “De Noche” in black and white, which would make it only the third time he’s done that in his career, after “I’m Not There” and “Wonderstruck.”

A few things align with this rumor being truthful. Firstly, “De Noche” has been described as a “detective noir,” and what better way to honor that genre than to shoot it in the style of “Double Indemnity” and “The Maltese Falcon” than in lush monochrome.

Furthermore, the cinematographer here is not a Haynes regular; it’s Michael Dymek, who did wonders with two-tone on Magnus von Horn’s “The Girl With the Needle.” Haynes must have been convinced enough by that film’s B&W photography that he decided to hire his services on “De Noche.”

“De Noche,” starring Joaquin Phoenix Pedro Pascal and Danny Ramirez, is being described as “a love story between two men” set in the 1930s. It currently has no release date, nor does it have a distributor attached, but it’s practically a cinch to premiere at Cannes 2027.
